Developers of The Edge Workshop

Ian Harris

Ian Harris was born in London, England and emigrated to the United States in 1950. He grew up in Bellwood, Illinois. He saw his first play at the age of 13, and was immediately "hooked."

Mr. Harris received his acting training both in Chicago at Jack and Jill Players and, later, at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. Since that time he has performed in numerous stage productions as well as a multiple award winning children’s television program.

In 1993 Mr. Harris founded Law Actors, a company that provides law firms with professional actors for evidence deposition readers, mock trial exercises, witness preparation and deposition and trial advocacy programs. Law Actors has been profiled in U.S.A. Today, on NPR Radio and The Daily Show and has worked with some of the largest firms in the country. For the past two years he has been working with Derrell Capes in the development and marketing of The Edge workshop.

Derrell Capes

Derrell Capes graduated from Hiram College with a B.A. in Theatre Arts in 1972, and earned an M.F.A. from the University of Denver in 1975. He moved to Chicago in 1978 and has been an actor and playwright from that time to the present.

Mr. Capes was introduced to the world of jurisprudence at an early age; his father was an attorney, and created the Labor Relations Division at one of the largest firms in Cleveland, Ohio in 1954. Derrell worked for ten years for Charter Ltd., a company that provided actors to assist law firms and schools in training programs. It was here that he was impressed with the similarities between the acting process and that of persuasive advocacy in the courtroom.

In 1989, Mr. Capes was invited to join the faculty of the New York State Defender Association’s Training Institute, and has been a valued participant in their seminars ever since. It was during his tenure there that the concept of a workshop devoted to the special problems of courtroom presentation began to take shape. Since then he has developed the idea into a weekend seminar and longer term class based on the exercises and practices developed in the NYSDA seminars.
